Across France, les grandes vacances come to an end. Schools reopen, cafés fill once more with familiar faces, markets become busier, and city life quietly finds its rhythm again. Yet unlike the hurried return often associated with September elsewhere, the French approach the season with a quieter sense of renewal.
Autumn does not arrive overnight. The days remain warm, terraces are still full, and the long light of late summer lingers a little longer. Rather than rushing back into busy routines, September offers an opportunity to return more intentionally—to everyday rituals, favourite places, simple wardrobes, and slower habits that make ordinary life feel beautiful again.
This month’s theme is simply: The Art of A Slow Return. Not about doing more. But about returning well.

After a short summer break, The Velvet Runway returns with a new season of French-inspired stories celebrating style, slow travel and everyday elegance. This month we’re embracing autumn gently—from French seasonal rituals and effortless dressing to Paris in early autumn, comforting French food and a few carefully chosen favourites for the season ahead.

Every September, France quietly changes pace.
The beaches empty, cafés welcome back familiar regulars, children return to school, and weekly markets begin overflowing with figs, mushrooms, apples and the first signs of autumn.
Rather than seeing September as an abrupt return to busy schedules, the French often embrace it as a season of renewal—one built around small routines, changing seasons and simple everyday rituals.
