Welcome back to The Velvet Runway and this feature about The 10 Best French Pharmacy Products.
Of all the wonders to see in France, an authentic French pharmacy is one of them. Full of treasures used by all French ‘It girls’ – from a gentle cleanser that transforms your skin, to a volumising dry shampoo that will cut down your hair routine – a French pharmacy is a must-see on any trip to France.
Unlike many beauty products marketed elsewhere, French pharmacy skincare focuses on gentle formulas, dermatological expertise, and simple routines that prioritise healthy skin over complicated beauty regimes. The result is a collection of cult products loved not only by French women but also by dermatologists, makeup artists and beauty editors around the world.
From a micellar cleanser that effortlessly removes makeup to a dry oil that nourishes both skin and hair, many of these products have achieved near-legendary status in the beauty world.
Having lived in France for many years, we’ve discovered that these are not just tourist curiosities. They are products you will genuinely find in French bathrooms, handbags and beauty cabinets (including our own!).
So if you’re curious about the products that French women quietly rely on every day, here are ten of the best French pharmacy products worth adding to your beauty routine.
This article was originally published in 2024 and has been updated to reflect the latest French pharmacy favourites.
Why French Pharmacy Skincare Is So Popular
French pharmacy skincare has earned a global reputation for being effective, gentle and surprisingly affordable. Many brands are developed in collaboration with dermatologists and are specifically designed for sensitive skin, making them ideal for people looking for simple, reliable skincare.
Brands such as Bioderma, La Roche-Posay and Avène are often recommended by dermatologists thanks to their minimalist formulas and strong focus on skin health.
Another reason these products are so loved is their versatility. Many French pharmacy favourites are multi-purpose products that simplify your beauty routine — something that fits perfectly with the French philosophy of effortless beauty.

1: Bioderma sensibio H20 Micellar water.
One of the most famous products to come out of the French pharmacy world is the iconic micellar water from Bioderma. Loved by makeup artists and beauty editors alike, it gently removes makeup, dirt and pollution while respecting the skin’s natural balance.
Because the formula is extremely gentle and free from harsh ingredients, it works beautifully even for sensitive or reactive skin. Many people use it as the first step in their skincare routine, both morning and evening, to cleanse and refresh the skin without irritation.

2: La Roche Posay – Anthelios UVMUNE 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+.
When it comes to sun care, it can be hard to find the right product for you. Until you come across La Roche Posay’s Anthelios UVMUNE 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+, which seems to do it all. It has a non-greasy, non-sticky formula that doesn’t leave white marks. It offers broad UVA/UVB protection and has been specially designed for sensitive skin.
It’s water and sweat resistant (it lasts up to 80 minutes underwater), which means you don’t have to worry about taking it off with your dip in the pool (although it’s always a good idea to reapply sun cream regularly).

3. Avène Eau Thermale Spring Water spray.
Chances are you’ve heard of Avène, because it’s one of France’s best-known beauty brands, both at home and abroad. And while it offers a host of products that could have made this list, the Eau Thermale spray stands out.
It comes directly from the natural springs of Avène in France, which means that the water is rich in minerals. As a result, it not only refreshes and moisturises the skin, but is also known to reduce skin irritation, redness, inflammation and even sunburn.

4. Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse.
Probably the most divine-smelling product on this list is Huile Prodigieuse by Nuxe. A favourite of French women here in France, mainly because it smells so good, but also because this dry oil does everything.
It’s made from a blend of plant oils and vitamin E that nourish and hydrate the skin, but you can also use it on your hair to add shine and reduce frizz.
There’s even Huile Prodigieuse Or by Nuxe, which is a golden version of the classic oil and perfect for adding a touch of shimmer in summer.

5. Embryolisse Lait-crème concentré.
Another multi-tasking hero in your beauty bag should be Embryolisse’s Lait-Crème Concentré. It can be used as a primer, moisturiser, make-up remover and even as a moisturising mask if you apply a thick layer.
So it really is one product that does it all and contains no parabens or sulphates, making it suitable for sensitive skin.
Shop for Embryolisse Lait Crème Concentré : Shop here.
6. Caudalie Beauty Elixir.
This is another product that’s known for its scent, which is more floral than Nuxe’s Huile prodigieuse but nonetheless enchanting. It’s a spray that can be used as a toner to tighten pores, but also as a setting spray for make-up or as a midday refresher for a little boost (the smell alone will help you get over that early afternoon slump).
It’s made from distilled plant water and essential oils and the drops of essential oil form a little layer on the surface. This is perfectly normal and simply means that before using it, you need to shake it well.

7. Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk.
Not only does this gentle dry shampoo do what it’s supposed to do by refreshing your hair between washes, it also gives you that perfect French look !
Now you know how French women get their hair so tousled and voluminous so effortlessly and to use like your favourite French muse, spray evenly onto the roots, wait two minutes, then brush through to distribute the product.

8. Best French Pharmacy Multi-Tasker : Homeoplasmine.
It’s a bit like Vaseline’s French cousin, and like many French pharmaceutical products, it seems you can use it for just about anything (which explains why it’s in every French household). Say you’ve got a painful sunburn or an itchy mosquito bite? Put a little homeoplasmine on it to relieve the itching and redness and help the skin heal. Or maybe you’ve blown your nose too often and now have flaky skin. Put on some homeoplasmine to soothe and protect the delicate skin in this area.
But it’s also an excellent beauty product and an amazing lip balm that prevents and heals cracked and chapped lips. It can also be used as a primer to soothe dry areas of skin before applying make-up, or as an illuminator on your cheeks, bow of the lips and eyelids!

French pharmacies are famous for their multi-purpose beauty products. You can discover more favourites in my guide to the best French pharmacy multitaskers.
9. Nuxe Rêve de Miel Ultra-Nourishing Lip Balm.
Speaking of soothing chapped and flaky lips, Nuxe’s ultra-nourishing Rêve de Miel lip balm has a rich texture that stays on the lips and forms a protective barrier while repairing the lips. It also has a delicious honey scent and works well as a primer before applying lipstick to ensure it stays put all day, or as an intensive overnight lip mask if you apply a thick layer before going to bed.

10. Avène Cicalfate Restorative Skin Cream.
Avène is so popular in France that it’s not surprising that another of the brand’s products should feature on this list. And if it was difficult to choose between all the brand’s products, the Cicalfate skin repair cream more than deserves this spot.
Again, this is a multi-purpose cream that repairs and protects damaged skin and skin irritations, such as cuts and burns, and is even prescribed after minor dermatological procedures to massage into the wound to prevent scarring. It is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and eczema-prone skin.

Final Thoughts on The 10 Best French Pharmacy Products
After many years living in France, these are still the products we return to again and again. They reflect the French approach to beauty: simple, effective, and quietly luxurious.
One of the things you may have noticed about this list is that almost all of the products can be used for a wide variety of purposes, which really reflects the French art of living, which is all about ease and simplicity. So once you’ve found the product or products that suit you best, you can keep them in your bag and pull them out when you need them to tackle any sort of beauty emergency!
Rather than complicated routines filled with dozens of products, French beauty tends to focus on a handful of trusted essentials that work well for multiple purposes.
If you ever find yourself visiting France, I highly recommend stepping inside a local pharmacy and exploring the shelves for yourself. You may just discover your next beauty essential.

These all sound amazing Julia. My Ashlin..has been using La Roche skin products awhile and I have a funny story about that Kloarane Shampoo..In Portugal last yr..I went into a pharmacy asked the lady for shampoo and conditioner in a travel pack..she handed me one …I paid without paying much attention. Washed my hair in the room and wondered why it felt so weird and tangled afterwords…the package had BODYWASH and conditioner not SHAMPOO and conditioner…HAHAHAHA…she misunderstood me I guess LOL! You are so fortunate to have your daughter help out with writing..I need a helper.. I am burnt out after 10 yrs of doing this! I quit Fora this week, its not working for me …ugh :/ Take carexoxoxo Val
I can imagine that body wash would not be great for your hair! I guess that your requirements got lost in translation! I’m sorry that Fora didn’t work out for you – such a shame after all the time you invested. And yes, I am so lucky that my daughter a) lives in Paris and b) writes posts for me! Take care xoxo

So wonderful that you shared these French products. My sister brought me back the Avene Thermal Spring Water when she came back from France last year. I have used it a few times, but I was still not quite sure how or when to use it. This post helped :))
