These are things you can accumulate before you need to start packing, as this will help you feel like there’s less to do when the moment arrives. Stock up on cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, film wrap and tape – you’ll need plenty of each!
It’s definitely also worth spending some time making sure that everything is labelled clearly so that you can reduce time spent in your new home trying to work out where everything is. You could even invest in a label printer to make the process more efficient.
Decluttering
The easiest way to reduce time spent packing up items is to have a clear out. The months before a move are a great opportunity to get rid of things that are just taking up space – and that you don’t see yourself using or enjoying in your new place.
You might be able to make back a bit of money on the various costs of moving by selling unwanted furniture, trinkets or clothes online, or you could simply pass on items to friends or charity shops, for whom they might be more useful.
Change of address
There’s almost no end to the number of people you need to inform about a change of address, so it’s worthwhile to write out a list of the important ones before you go. This means you can get to work on taking care of it as soon as you get there.
Providers of things like home insurance might well be high up the list, as it’s possible for your premium to change depending on where you live. But you’ll also want to get in touch with utility companies so that you don’t get stuck paying for bills that aren’t yours at your old address.
Reach out for help
We all have to do it now and then, so everyone understands how draining moving can be. And that means you shouldn’t be afraid of leaning on people for help during such a time!
Reach out to family and friends, who will usually be happy to offer an extra pair of hands for packing or transportation. Even the kids can get involved, especially if they feel included in taking ownership of their things! But this can also simply mean not feeling guilty for hiring a removal company – they exist for a very good reason.
