In today’s post I want to look at how to wear a maxi skirt, as this is without any doubt one of the most comfortable wardrobe staples we possess.

They’re very versatile, and it’s easy to wear them with a wide variety of tops and shoes making them perfect transitional pieces from Spring to Summer and Summer to Autumn, as well as from day to night. I paired the maxi skirt below with a simple black top and black pumps for an easy to wear daytime look, and added a thin black belt to accentuate the waist.

I even wore the slightly longer belted maxi-skirt (below) on a long-haul flight as it was so comfortable – firstly it has an elasticated waist and secondly the long length meant there was no need for socks or tights as it kept my legs warm on the flight (and we all know how uncomfortable tights can be on a long haul flight). Finally, it is totally crease-proof so you arrive at your destination looking fresh (or at least your clothes do!)

If you want to wear a maxi skirt for work, then simply pair it with a crisp white or cream shirt and /or a structured blazer to get the polished look. In this case, make sure that the maxi you choose has a fitted waist (or wear a belt), is structured and a suitable colour and material to wear to work. A cropped blazer, such as this blazer from Sandro, works well as it balances out the length of the skirt (and you can also unzip the sleeves turning it into a vest and enhancing its versatility). However, if you are tall (unlike me), then you can get away with a longer blazer.

Depending on your work environment, a cropped leather jacket would add a more edgy vibe to the look, or you can change from day to night look by swapping the blazer for a leather jacket and the court shoes for sandals, as well as changing your accessories. (Swapping the button down shirt for a simple white tee would complete the transformation)

For a night out, opt for a more feminine, ruffled style maxi skirt and pair it with a lacy top and heels.

More tips to “maxi”-mize the versatility:

Material – avoid ultra-thin clingy material, as this is never flattering! If you can see your underwear line or your shirt if it’s tucked in – then you shouldn’t buy it!

Balance – To avoid looking frumpy – balance the length of the maxi with a short top. If you’re young enough and have washboard abs then a cropped top looks fantastic, although at my age I have opted to define the waist with a belt. Also, if you wear a jacket, a cropped jacket will give better balance, unless you are very tall!

Length: A maxi’s length can vary greatly, from a couple of inches above the ankle to floor length. Both these lengths are great – however, avoid a skirt that is exactly at ankle height as it will cut off your legs and make them look “stumpy”. A good tip to elongate your legs is to choose a maxi-skirt that has a slit at the side.
