Following on from last week’s post about “breaking the fashion rules“, I am wearing horizontal stripes again, only this time they are more colourful (and the post is a lot shorter as I’m not explaining the optical illusion about horizontal stripes again this week!), although I am giving some styling tips.
Horizontal stripes have long been a style staple, but they sometimes get a bad reputation for being “unflattering.” The truth is, when styled thoughtfully, they can be chic, playful, and flattering on all body types. Here’s how to make them work for you.
1. Consider Stripe Width
As I mentioned last week, all horizontal stripes are not created equal and it was found that narrow black stripes on a white background were most flattering — ideally when there was about 10 per cent black to 90 per cent white.
Thin stripes create a subtle, elegant effect, while bold, wide stripes make a strong statement. If you’re looking to elongate your figure, thin stripes tend to be more flattering, while wider stripes are perfect for adding volume or a playful twist.
Pro Tip: Pair a wide-striped top with solid bottoms to balance the look and avoid feeling “overwhelmed” by pattern.
2. Play with Proportions when wearing Horizontal Stripes
Horizontal stripes can be a great way to emphasize or de-emphasize certain areas. A cropped striped top can highlight your waist, while a striped skirt or pants can add curves where you want them.
Pro Tip: Break up the stripes with a belt, jacket, or cardigan to create vertical lines that visually elongate your silhouette.
3. Mix Horizontal Stripes with Other Patterns Carefully
Stripes don’t have to be boring! Combining horizontal stripes with small, subtle patterns like polka dots or florals can create an interesting, modern look.
Pro Tip: Keep your color palette cohesive—stick to 2-3 colors max for a stylish, put-together outfit.
4. Layer Smartly
A striped tee or blouse works beautifully under blazers, denim jackets, or long cardigans. Layering adds depth and sophistication while making stripes less overwhelming.
Pro Tip: A solid outer layer over a striped base can instantly make your outfit feel chic and intentional.
5. Accessorize with Confidence
Stripes are bold on their own, so pairing them with minimal accessories lets them shine. Think simple jewelry, neutral shoes, and classic handbags.
Pro Tip: If you love mixing textures, leather or denim pairs effortlessly with horizontal stripes for a modern edge.
With these tips, horizontal stripes can be anything but boring. Embrace them confidently, experiment with proportions, and have fun adding pattern to your wardrobe!
