Welcome back to the Velvet Runway and this feature about Home and Lifestyle Hacks to Save You Money.

Worried about higher bills this winter? Or just worried about higher bills full stop? We don’t blame you. It certainly doesn’t hurt to keep scooping up new money-saving tactics, so luckily for you, there’s a whole list of them below:

Savvy Living: Home and Lifestyle Hacks to Save You Money

Home and Lifestyle Hacks

Batch-cook meals

Buying ingredients in larger packaging or as part of an offer is often cheaper. But what to do once you’ve taken the shopping home and stuffed your fridge? You don’t want any of that food to go to waste, so why not set aside an afternoon or an evening simply to batch-cook some meals?

Chilli, Bolognese, curry, and soup are all easy to freeze. Just make sure your freezer has the space to accommodate it all!

If you like to order subscription boxes like Gousto or Mindful Chef and there are only one or two people in your household, you could even try ordering a family-size box and cooking everything at once. That way, things may work out a little bit cheaper and you’ve just cooked enough meals for more than one day.

Shop around for deals

Worried about how quickly your bank account seems to exhale money as soon as payday comes around? If so, it could be time to sit down and research deals.

This sounds great, but what kind of deals? Well, this is a personal question. Do you feel there is room to economise on your phone bill, energy bills, toiletries, or clothes?

Take the time to research each area that applies methodically. When it comes to those smaller essentials, look for false economies in your life. For example, do you buy cheaper clothes from particular brands but find that they wear out quickly? Finding a slightly more expensive but higher-quality brand may help you save. Do you spend a lot on potions and lotions but always buy them individually? Maybe if you bulk buy some of these products online, you’ll pay significantly less per individual item.

Save on car costs

If your automotive costs are a major concern, ask yourself how essential a car is to your lifestyle.

Maybe you could cut down on those insurance premiums by selling your car and just using someone else’s (with their consent, of course!). You can then just pay for temporary insurance that only covers you for the specific hours or days that you intend to spend behind the wheel.

Fall in love with vintage

Getting caught in the fast fashion frenzy? If so, you’re not alone.

10,000 items of clothing are sent to British landfill sites every five minutes. That’s £140 million in value per year.

Vintage clothes

This is a great incentive to cultivate an interest in vintage clothes. Clothes from bygone decades are often better quality because they were built for people who had a “make do and mend” mentality.

Rifling through the stock of actual shocks can be fun and rewarding. If you’re more of an online shopper, there are bargain vintage pieces to be found on Vinted, eBay, Depop, and Etsy.

Review your subscriptions

Still hunting around for ways to cut down on those costs? Then it might be time to sit down and do a personal audit of your subscriptions. List them out and then decide which ones you no longer use. Then, find out how to cancel these.

Home and Lifestyle Hacks

If there’s something you can’t quite cancel, but may be able to replace for less money, this too is worth investigating. Get to grips with alternative deals that can help you get the same thing for less. For example, do you pay a monthly fee for your favourite online newspaper? You may be able to find a news app elsewhere for less that includes this, along with other publications?
