A few months ago, Smile Brilliant contacted me to test their teeth whitening system, and as a regular coffee and red wine drinker, I was very happy to put this system to the test.

Smile Brilliant Review*

As you may have noticed, I am pretty much always smiling as I believe a smile is your best beauty accessory, so it’s very important to me that my teeth are in good condition and not discoloured.  I have previously considered having my teeth professionally whitened at the dentist but the combination of the cost and inconvenience were more that enough to put me off. The idea of being able to whiten my teeth professionally from the comfort of my own home seemed like a perfect solution. (And Smile Brilliant’s system is under $150, compared to a minimum price tag of $500 at the dentist).

The Smile Brilliant Process

So this is how the teeth whitening process works:

  1. The first thing to do when you receive your kit is to make up the impressions for the custom trays. This involves mixing the catalyst paste (white) with the base paste (blue). The set comes with a spare pot of each, in case you make a mistake. I was pretty sure I would need the spare pot, but miraculously managed to make the impressions at my first attempt! The instructions given with the kit are very clear and easy to follow.
  2. You have to knead both pastes together very quickly and then fit the resulting paste into the trays (one for your upper teeth and one for your lower teeth) then make the impressions before the paste hardens. Make sure to have your phone next to you, as you will need a timer for this process.
  3. The tricky bit was inserting the trays correctly into my mouth as I had to tilt them a bit to insert them.
  4. Once you have finished the impressions, complete the admin form and ship them back to the lab. If you live in the US, return postage is free, but if you live outside the US, you have to pay to send the impressions back. I live in France and it cost me about $10 to send the trays back.
  5. Within a week (slightly longer outside the US, depending on your delivery country) you will get a package back with the customised trays and you’re ready to start whitening!
  6. Again, the process is described clearly in the kit, and there are two gels – a whitening gel and a desensitising gel.
  7. You use the whitening gel first for 45 minutes to 3 hours (depending on sensitivity), followed by the desensitising gel for 15 -20 minutes, if you have sensitive teeth or gums

My experience

Although, the trays fit perfectly, I found them very uncomfortable to start with (I imagine if you have ever had a mouth guard or used “invisalign” or a similar system, then this bit won’t concern you, but I have never had braces of any description so found the feel of the trays very disconcerting!). It took me several attempts to get used to them and I had to build up slowly, starting at just 5 minutes!

I don’t have very sensitive teeth, but I did use the desensitising gel regularly, to ensure optimum results. If you have very sensitive teeth, then it would be a good idea to do a couple of sessions using just the desensitising gel, before beginning the whitening process.

Smile Brilliant recommends doing the process at night, just before bed, to avoid eating or drinking after the whitening and thereby getting better results. I think this is an excellent recommendation, but as it wasn’t always practical for me, I just used the gels whenever I could. The key thing is to make sure you don’t eat or drink for a minimum of 30 minutes afterwards.

My Results

I didn’t have particularly yellow teeth to start with, and at the time the ‘after’ photos were taken, I was only half way through the gels, so I think that the results will be even better in a few more weeks.

But, even after just a few uses, there is a difference, and I think this product would be fantastic for anyone who smokes or drinks a lot of  coffee and has staining on their teeth.

Overall, I am very impressed with Smile Brilliant! The instructions are very clear, the delivery speed was very reasonable  and the results are very satisfactory, although would obviously be more noticeable on someone with more discoloured teeth.
