Welcome back to the Velvet Runway and this feature about How to Sparkle in Sequins at Any Age. Sequins have long been associated with evening wear, parties, and special occasions — beautiful, yes, but often saved for “best.” For years, we were told that sequins were too much for daytime, too bold, too attention-seeking, or simply impractical.
Thankfully, that outdated rule no longer applies.Today, sequins can be worn any time of day, at any age, and in a way that feels chic, modern, and surprisingly wearable. The secret lies not in the sequins themselves, but in how you style them.

How to Sparkle in Sequins at Any Age
“I’m just trying to change the world one sequin at a time.” Lady Gaga
Sequins used to only be acceptable for evening wear, parties and nights out, and it was considered a bit “tacky” to wear sequins during the day.
But, now this fashion “rule” no longer applies and it is just as acceptable to wear sequins for a Sunday brunch as for a Saturday night party! The difference is all about how you style them!
Reasons why you should Sparkle in Sequins in the day

Adding sparkle to your wardrobe isn’t about seeking attention. It’s about energy.
Sequins reflect light, movement, and mood. They lift neutral outfits, add interest to simple silhouettes, and — perhaps most importantly — change how you feel when you get dressed.
Sequins don’t belong to one decade, one body type, or one lifestyle. They belong to anyone who wants to feel a little more luminous as :
- They give a certain “Wow” factor to your look, and will make you feel confident and glamorous.
- Adding a little sparkle can brighten up your day (and that of everyone who sees you!).
- Glimmering sequins can look chic and elegant when paired with everyday basics, such as a black sweater or a pair of jeans. If you’re not brave enough to try full on glam, a sparkly bag or heels will instantly elevate your look.
- Sequins are a great way to transition from day to night, so are great “shop your wardrobe” pieces.
Pro tip: During busy or emotionally demanding seasons, small style choices can act as anchors. A touch of sparkle pairs beautifully with a slower, more intentional approach to life.
How to sparkle in sequins in the day.
I am a big fan of wearing sequins in the day, as it makes me feel confident and glamorous (in the same way wearing red does).
However, the last thing we want is to look like a 1970s disco ball, or that we’ve somehow missed the party! So, there are a few “rules” to follow to wear sequins in the day.
The secret to wearing sequins well — especially during the day — is contrast. Sequins shine brightest when they’re grounded by simplicity.
1 Only wear one sequin piece (ie: Avoid “head to toe” sequins)
This is the most important rule, and the one that instantly separates chic from costume.
One sequin piece per outfit is enough. Anything more risks overwhelming your frame and diluting the impact.

Whilst a sequin dress can look fabulous at night, I would avoid wearing it in the daytime, as it is a little “too much”. If you do opt for a sequin dress for daytime wear, dress it down with jeans and an oversize bag to transform it into a tunic or a basic sweater to transform it into a skirt.
Pro tip: Layer a fine knit or cashmere grey, black or navy sweater over it to transform it into a daytime skirt. You instantly double its wearability.
2 Keep everything else minimal – basic cuts and neutral colours
The sequins make enough of a statement on their own, so keep the rest of your look minimal and basic.

Pair with basic pieces, such as a cashmere sweater, a simple unadorned tee or basic jeans.
Keep the rest of your outfit monochrome and in neutral colours that coordinate with your “statement sequins”, for example, white, beige, navy, grey or black.
Keeping the rest of the look simple allows the sequins to be the focal point of the outfit and tones the look down from glamorous night out to casual chic.
Avoid prints and bright colours.
Pro tip: If you’re ever unsure, remove one item before leaving the house — restraint always reads as elegance.
3 The sequins ARE the accessory
When you are wearing sequins, you are basically walking jewellery, so there is no need to accessorise. Sequins are jewellery — and they sparkle more when they’re allowed to stand alone.

Keep your accessories simple and minimal. Shoes and bags should be monochrome and neutral, and avoid any statement jewellery pieces, or you will look like a cross between a chandelier and a disco ball, which is not really the look we are going for.
Pro tip: If you’re wearing sequins, imagine your outfit in black and white. If it still looks balanced, you’ve got it right.
4 Wear the sequin piece strategically
Just like bright colours, sequins attract the eye, and make that area of the body seem bigger.

So, if you are a pear shape (bigger on the bottom half), you should wear a sequin top or jacket to attract the eye upwards and away from your hips and thighs. Conversely, if you want to downplay your bust area and highlight your legs, then opt for a sequin skirt or trousers. If you prefer a more subtle sparkle then keep sequins below the waist
This tip is similar to my tip on how to wear floral prints – the aim is to use the bold print or sparkle to attract the eye where you want people to look.
Pro tip: Think of sequins as visual punctuation — use them where you want the eye to pause.
5 Choose Colours That Complement Your Skin Tone
Just because you are wearing sequins doesn’t mean you can ignore your skin colouring, particularly if you’re wearing the sequins close to your face.
- Cool undertones shine in silver, pewter, cool pinks, and icy hues
- Warm undertones glow in gold, bronze, champagne, and warm neutrals
If your sequins are worn on the lower half of the body, you have more freedom.
Pro tip: Champagne-toned sequins are universally flattering and very French in feel — understated rather than showy.
6 Balance Glamour with Elegant Cuts
The sequins are glamorous and sexy, so to keep the look chic and sophisticated, make sure your skirt length is conservative and that your neckline isn’t too low cut, as this could cheapen the look and distract from the sophisticated feel of the outfit!
Pro tip: If the fabric sparkles, let the cut whisper.
7 Keep your hair and make-up subtle
Daytime sequins work best with relaxed beauty.

As mentioned above, the sequins are the star of the show, and you should keep your makeup subtle and natural. I would also keep your hair low-key and natural too, and either tie it back in a messy up do, or opt for loose casual waves, but avoid anything too stylised and glamorous curls.
Pro tip: Aim for “undone chic” — the kind of ease that feels confident rather than contrived.
8 Start Small with Sequin Accessories
If full sequins feel daunting, accessories are a perfect entry point.
Although I said to avoid accessories when wearing sequins, it’s perfectly OK to have sparkly accessories, if these are your ONLY sequin pieces!
A sequin bag, belt, or shoes can:
- elevate a neutral outfit
- feel playful rather than overwhelming
- add interest without commitment

Pro tip: Accessories are a great way to enjoy sparkle while keeping your wardrobe sustainable and versatile.
9 Sequins as Day-to-Night Heroes
Sequins are ideal transitional pieces. For example, wear a sequin skirt during the day with a soft knit and ballet flats. For the evening, keep everything else the same and simply add a tailored blazer. The contrast between relaxed daytime textures and sharper evening structure is what elevates the look.

With a few simple swaps you move effortlessly into evening ready for champagne cocktails and quiet celebration.
When styling from day to night, change only one anchor piece. Keep your base outfit the same and switch either the shoes, the bag, or the outer layer — never all three. This creates a deliberate, confident transition rather than a “full outfit change” and mirrors the effortless French approach to evening dressing.
10. Confidence Is the Final Styling Ingredient
Sequins attract light — and attention. You may feel a bit uncomfortable if you’re not used to wearing sequins, but don’t worry and try not to feel too self conscious.
The difference between looking overdressed and looking chic is confidence. Wear them with intention, not apology.
Pro tip: Style isn’t about permission. It’s about ownership.
Final Thoughts : How to Sparkle in Sequins at Any Age
Sequins aren’t about excess. When styled thoughtfully, they’re about confidence, joy, and modern femininity.
Whether you choose a subtle shimmer or a bold statement piece, sequins deserve a place in a grown-up, elegant wardrobe — not just for evenings, but for real life. Less really is more. And sparkle, when done well, never goes out of style.

This is my last post before the holidays, and as we enter the festive season, I want to remind you that “Presence matters more than performance.“
In France, the holidays are less about racing from one obligation to the next and more about sharing a meal, taking an afternoon walk, lingering over coffee, or simply letting the moment unfold without rushing to the next thing.
So this month, I hope you’ll give yourself permission to slow down — just a little: to choose the things that feel nourishing, to create space for the rituals that bring you joy and to enjoy the season the way the French do: with intention, warmth, simplicity, and a deep appreciation for the small things.
