Welcome back to The Velvet Runway and this feature about Important Things to Do Before You Travel: A Practical Pre-Trip Checklist.
Travelling abroad is always exciting, but a successful trip depends on careful preparation before you even leave home. A little thoughtful preparation can turn travel from something slightly stressful into something genuinely pleasurable.
For UK travellers in 2025, changing entry rules, evolving health guidance and new payment methods make planning ahead more important than ever.
By taking a few essential steps before you leave home, you can avoid unnecessary complications and focus on what really matters — enjoying the experience from the moment your trip begins.

1. Check passport validity, visas, and entry requirements
One of the first things to confirm is that your passport meets the entry requirements for your destination. Many countries require at least six months of validity remaining, so checking dates well in advance is crucial.
Visa rules can vary depending on nationality, length of stay and purpose of travel, and some destinations now require electronic travel authorisations completed online before arrival.
It is also important to check entry rules for any countries you will transit through, as even short stopovers may still have documentation requirements that could disrupt your journey if overlooked. One excellent tip is to have photocopy backups of your essential travel documents, especially in case of loss or theft while abroad.

Pro Tip : Store digital copies securely on your phone and in cloud storage so you can access them even if your luggage goes missing.
2. Organise travel money and budget
Sorting your finances ahead of time makes travelling far smoother. Setting a realistic budget helps manage daily spending and prevents unexpected costs from adding up. It is wise to plan when and where to buy travel money, whether that is foreign currency, prepaid travel cards or relying on debit and credit cards.
Checking which payment methods are widely accepted at your destination can reduce the need for cash and limit unnecessary fees, and it’s also worth noting that some destinations are increasingly cash-free.

Letting your bank know about your travel plans can help prevent cards from being blocked unexpectedly, and checking foreign transaction fees in advance can save money over the course of your trip.
Pro Tip: Carry at least two payment methods and keep them in separate places for extra peace of mind.
3. Prepare health precautions and travel insurance
Health preparation should never be left until the last minute. Check vaccination recommendations and health advisories for your destination, including any health-related guidance that may apply.

Comprehensive travel insurance is another essential, as the right policy can cover medical treatment, emergency repatriation, trip cancellations, and lost belongings — offering reassurance should the unexpected happen. While it’s something we hope never to need, having appropriate cover allows you to travel with confidence.
Pro Tip : Make sure your insurance covers any specific activities you plan to do, such as skiing, hiking, and/or car hire.
4. Plan your itinerary and transportation abroad
Researching your destination in advance allows you to make the most of your time once you arrive. Additionally, you should always aim to book your accommodation and key activities early to help avoid peak prices and sold-out attractions.

Understanding local transport options, such as trains, buses or car hire, can also make getting around easier and more efficient. Of course, issues can always arise on the day, so it’s sensible to keep an eye on local travel updates, events or restrictions that could affect plans, ensuring your trip runs as smoothly as possible from start to finish.
Pro Tip: Save offline maps, transport apps, and key addresses on your phone in case you have limited internet access.

These are all such helpful tips, my friend! I’ve never travelled out of my country (United States), but I so agree with you even within traveling here, travel insurance is beyond worth it and we’ve found that renting a car is a must so we aren’t dependent on cabs or things like that.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend! 🙂
