There is a particular art to doing London well — and it has very little to do with racing between the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye and Buckingham Palace before lunch. The London worth returning to is quieter: a city of market stalls and pub fires, of matinées and museum halls you can wander without a plan. This is a long weekend in London the French way — unhurried, intentional, and led by taste rather than a checklist.

Why you need a long weekend in London
Updated September 2026
Begin at The Tower of London
Some things earn their reputation – The Tower of London is one of them — not for the crowds, but for the Yeoman Warders, whose “Beefeater” nickname comes from their old privilege of eating freely from the King’s table. Their tours turn nine centuries of history — prison, treasury, sanctuary, even a private zoo — into something closer to storytelling than sightseeing.

Although the Tower is synonymous with imprisonment, it has also functioned as a treasury, a sanctuary, an armoury and even a zoo since it was built in medieval times

Stay for the ravens: legend holds that if they ever leave the Tower, the Crown falls with them. Give this a full, unrushed morning before the day pulls you elsewhere.
Stroll Through Golborne Road Market
North of the tourist thrum of Portobello Road sits Golborne Road — smaller, calmer, and far more interesting for it. Vintage clothing rails sit beside stalls of handmade goods and produce, and the cafés here are priced for locals, not visitors.

It is the kind of morning that rewards no agenda at all: a coffee, a slow circuit of the stalls, an unplanned find.
Sit With Notting Hill, Don’t Just Pass Through
Just beyond Golborne Road, Notting Hill’s pastel façades are well known by now — but the neighbourhood deserves more than a photo stop. Settle into an armchair at the Electric Cinema for a matinée, then let Westbourne Grove’s boutiques and brunch rooms fill the rest of your afternoon.

If your visit lands in August, the Notting Hill Carnival brings the whole neighbourhood into the street in a swell of calypso and colour rooted in its Caribbean history.
Visit the Harry Potter Studios
This is one place that will be full of tourists, but any Harry Potter fan should not miss it.
It does tend to be busier at weekends, but you can book your tickets online so you can be sure of getting in.
Let the Museums Take an Afternoon
London’s major museums are free to enter — a rare gift in a city this expensive — and several are vast enough to absorb a full afternoon without exhausting their rooms. Skip the temptation to “see everything.” Choose one wing, one century, one collection, and let it hold your attention properly.

Find the Evening’s Music
There is almost always a festival or live set happening somewhere in London on a given weekend, and the city’s music scene regularly draws some of the industry’s biggest names to intimate stages. Ask wherever you’re staying what’s on — the best evenings here tend to be the ones you didn’t plan for.

Take a Seat in the Theatre
London sits second only to Broadway for the calibre of its stage productions, and a well-cast West End show — The Lion King and Wicked remain reliable standouts — is worth building an evening around. Book ahead, dress for it, and treat the interval glass of wine as part of the ritual.
Eat delicious food in awe-inspiring surroundings
A London weekend should include at least one meal chosen for its atmosphere as much as its menu — the kind of room that makes the evening itself feel like the occasion.

Of course, we want the food to be enticing, but we want the decor to be enticing too, and the best restaurants in the Capital combine great food with great content for your Instagram feed. The most instagrammable restaurants in London offer a beautiful aesthetic with lush decor, stunning centrepieces and innovatively presented dishes, so that you can immerse yourself in beauty both on and off the plate!
Whilst you’re planning a weekend in London, make sure to plan some great meals with some opportunities for the perfect photo!
Close the Day at a London Pub
Central London’s pubs have a character that doesn’t translate well to description — you simply have to sit in one, order something, and let the evening unfold among locals who will, more often than not, welcome you into the conversation.

In London everyone is different, and that means anyone can fit in. Paddington Bear
Where to stay on a weekend in London
A hotel or serviced apartment in the centre will keep you within walking distance of most of this itinerary. If you’d rather have the run of a full flat, Airbnb remains a reliable option, with many hosts renting out well-located townhouses and apartments they use themselves when not travelling.

My husband didn’t think he’d want to go to London because he’s always heard that the food isn’t that great. But with the free museums and all the other fun, it’s on my list one of these days. I think it’ll be for more than a weekend though…I hope!
