Welcome back to The Velvet Runway and this feature about Le Bœuf sur le Toit Celebrates its 100th Anniversary this year.

Le Bœuf sur le Toit, iconic restaurant and music hall, celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.

Since its creation in 1922, the history of the Bœuf sur le Toit has been closely linked to a group of artists, musicians, poets and painters who met there every week around Jean Cocteau – the owner of the place.

Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, Josephine Baker, Francis Picabia, Picasso, Erik Satie, and later Charles Trenet and Léo Ferré, used to meet there for festive nights, improvised concerts and artistic performances, giving rise to the expression “faire un Bœuf” (“to have a jam”).

100 years later, what is the secret of youth of this iconic venue of Parisian gastronomy and night-life? If the Bœuf sur le Toit manages to cross the ages with such panache, it is because it is rooted in its rich past, as much as in its vibrant present.

A mythical music hall, faithful to its soul

The new face of Le Bœuf sur le Toit, with its interiors revamped by the brilliant Alexis Mabille, a multifaceted modern creator  remains faithful to its soul, and places the artists at the heart of the house.

Alexis Mabille has chosen a singular décor inspired by the restaurant’s most glorious years, the 20s, 30s and 40s, with a sort of twist on Art Deco, to bring it into our time.

From Monday to Saturday night, the music hall is in full swing with jazz and pop concerts, ranging from standards of the genre to the promotion of young artists and a festive atmosphere all of the time.

Before the show, let’s eat!

In a shimmering décor that pays homage to the most beautiful motifs and silky materials of the 1920s, the restaurant’s menu is an ode to traditional and tasty French cuisine.

The restaurant’s graphic lines and play of mirrors combine the warmth of inlaid wood with gold leaf bronzes. Le Bœuf sur le Toit is a place where you can spend the whole evening without ever leaving: from the restaurant to the bar, to the music hall, smoking room and private rooms.

Sole meunière, macaroni with morel mushrooms, coquelet with devil’s sauce or leeks with vinaigrette are the must-try dishes of the house.

The cocktail menu is the result of a close collaboration with the iconic House of Hennessy, with signature recipes that trace the 250-year old history of the prestigious Cognac house.
