Transition to Spring

Welcome back to the Velvet Runway and this post with our simple styling tricks to transition from Winter to Spring.

So Spring has sprung, and I’m so glad that the warmer weather is on its way.  I’m dreaming of floaty dresses and pastel colours, but I think I’m getting a bit ahead of myself as it’s still pretty cold here! So, I’m not quite ready to put away my coats and winter wardrobe yet!

Here are a few tips to dress to transition to Spring.

Adapt your colour scheme

It’s too cold for me to put away my Winter coats, but a simple change of colours can transform your look from Winter to Spring.  Spring colours, such as zingy orange, bright yellows, pinks and blues, pastels such as blush pink and baby blue and neutrals such as cream and camel will ensure you transition easily into Spring. I changed my usual black coat for a camel coat and if it’s slightly warmer where you are, then you can opt for a jacket.

I chose to still wear jeans, but opted to switch from my usual dark jeans to a lighter blue.

A Winter dress or skirt can easily be worn well into the Spring by adapting your accessories (see below) and by replacing your Winter coat with an edgy suede or leather jacket to update your look.

Adapt your accessories

A simple matter of updating your accessories can also transform your look from Winter to Spring. Here are a few ideas you might like to try.

  • Shoes – change from boots to shoes (or if you’re very brave sandals!)
  • Tights – change your opaque tights for a more sheer version or for skin tone tights
  • Scarves  – swapping your heavy Winter scarf for one of the floaty, lightweight scarves in Spring tones will instantly transform your outfit
  • Bags – similarly change your black, burgundy or brown bags for a lighter and or brighter Spring color – try bright blue, pink, blush, camel…….
  • Statement jewellery – choose chunky eye-catching jewellery in beautiful Spring colours
  • Sunglasses – wear sunglasses and hope the sun will take the hint!
  • Make-up – again opt for Spring techniques and colours such as a natural sun kissed skin, lavender and teal eyeshadow, metallics, and red or glossy lips (there is also a new technique, called ‘draping’, wearing your blush high up on your cheeks and to the sides of your eyes, but personally, I won’t be trying this one!).

 Use layers wisely

Layers are the perfect way to adapt to the changing weather  – one minute you’re freezing and then the sun comes out and you’re boiling hot!

See below for a layered look, or wear a chunky sweater over a tank or blouse.

I chose to take these photos outside in nature as this felt like the appropriate place for a Spring photoshoot.
